Overview
The Lexus RX Hybrid is one of those new cars that are recently flooding are markets. Just 10 years ago hybrid cars were surreal, but today hybrid cars are becoming more and more widespread and popular. The USA NEWS & WORLD REPORT ranks the Lexus RX Hybrid and the best hybrid SUV for its cost. The 2010 model is the 2nd generation of its class and is marked by several upgrades. The moniker is upgraded from 400h to 450h, the V6 engine grew from 3.3 to 3.5 liters, and more compact batteries as well as a stronger fuel economy can be seen in the newest model.
Technology
A new feature in the modern model is what experts refer to as Remote Touch. Most Lexus models are known for their substantial use of touch screen technology. The Remote Touch is an interface system similar to that of a computer mouse or a joystick that is used to smoothly operate the vehicles navigation system. Similar to many touch phones today, the remote provides haptic feedback, or a force feedback reaction, to let your know whether your actions are working or not. This reduces the need for your eyes to be looking away from the road substantially reducing the chance of accidents found with common in-car GPS systems.
Performance
As a hybrid the Lexus RX houses many internal features not found in your ordinary cars. First of all, the car is customizable with either a front wheel or all wheel drive. Two engines can be found in the front wheel drive version. One engine is for generating the motor power and an electric one for a more efficient source. This dual engine system provides for a greater range of performance from the electric motor as well as the familiar power of the gas motor. Furthermore, a special mode on the car that can be switched on, called ECO mode, allows the car to automatically adjust and respond to the throttle to reduce aggressive acceleration as well as air conditioning inefficiencies. The MSRP for this vehicle ranges from $42,685 to $44,275 for the various customizations. Lastly, the engine has been upgraded to a 245 horsepower one up from a 208 from the previous RX.
Exterior
Details in this vehicle have been more modernized. Smaller headlamps, skinnier rear glass, a more sleek appearance has made the overall appearance of the vehicle much less imposing than before. Rather than a clunky SUV; it is a sleek hybrid. The rest of the exterior is similar to the previous models.
Interior
In the new version the cockpit has been made over. The entire console and dash have been redone with new shapes, textures and much of the wood trim has been removed for a more modern finish. The Remote Touch console can be found between the driver and front passenger seat for easy access as well as a much computerized console system.
Safety
The Lexus RX Hybrid received an impressive 5 stars on all front and side collision tests from the federal government. An amazing new technological feature that assists with safety is the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management, a system which integrates braking, steering, Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control into a smooth and efficient one. Anti-lock brakes, brake assists, electronic brake force distribution, and even water repellent front door glass can be found in this vehicle. Interestingly, an option of installing a Pre-Collision system with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which uses radar technology to help maintain a pre-set following distance from the vehicle ahead. If you get too close, the RX automatically applies the brakes to slow you down. Finally, another unique option is a Heads-Up Display, which projects important information, such as speed, onto the windshield so that you don’t have to look away from the road.
Reliability
Reliability is something that is hard to conceive with a hybrid. The hybrids are so new and auspicious. However, the Lexus RX is derived from a gas-powered car which gives a strong foundation of reliability beyond the norm. Lexus, well-known for their reliability, offers a basic warranty for the first four years or 50,000 miles, and a powertrain warranty for six years or 70,000 miles. The RX’s hybrid system is covered for eight years or 100,000 miles. Covered components include the hybrid control module, hybrid battery control module, hybrid battery, and inverter with converter.
